IPCC: We are in the last years that may limit the devastating effect of climate change.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has published its study titled  ”Special Report on Global Warming 1.5 Degrees”.
The report, prepared with the work of 90 experts from 41 countries lasting more than three years, underlines that the global temperature increase has increased by 1 degree compared to before industrialization and that the upward trend continues to a dangerous extent.

According to the study, the level of increase will reach 1.5 degrees in 2030 with the current trend. Even if the country's governments fulfill all of their commitments in the Paris Climate Agreement adopted in 2015, they will also be able to achieve a 2-degree increase.

According to the report, despite this negative situation, this deterioration can still be technically limited. But for this, very rapid and far-reaching steps should be taken, in which all segments of societies are involved. Politically, leadership is also one of the conditions for this goal.

According to the study, even a 1.5-degree increase will lead to a decrease in biodiversity on Earth, sea level rise, more frequent and intense heat waves, extreme climate events. an increase of 2 degrees, on the other hand, will lead to more devastating effects on the world's eco-system and hundreds of millions of people will be more severely affected by these effects and become poorer.

According to the report, in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, greenhouse gas emissions should be reduced by 45% compared to 2010 levels by 2030 and should be reduced to zero by 2050.

For the 2-degree limit, the annual amount of emissions that must be reduced by 2030 is 20 percent, while the deadline for zero emissions is 2075.
For the 1.5 degree limit target, 2.5% of global gross product should be used for carbon reduction every year until 2030.

In addition, 85% of global electricity production by 2050 should be provided from renewable sources, and the use of coal in electricity generation should also decrease to zero on the same date.18.07.2023
